Collectors coins

Collecting rare coins and the study of currency can be summed up by the term Numismatics.

Nowadays, a Numismatist would not only have an appreciation of rare coins and historic currency but may also be interested in medals, paper currency and even cryptocurrency.

There is a growing community of numismatists and coin collectors. Some use it as a hobby and are more interested in gathering full sets of coins or finding specific coins that mark a specific time in history.

Others use the study and collecting of coins as a way of investment and preserving personal wealth over time.

Rare/Collectors coins more often than not, retain their value and are more likely to increase in value during times of volatility in the stock market.

There are a wide range of options including limited edition coins, royal mint coins, minting error coins, and collectors coins. If you do enough research and have a true interest in the history of money/currency, you could turn a hobby into a savvy investment.

Numismatics is an area of study that requires a great deal of time and effort. However, if you are looking to make a quick buck, then this type of collecting is unlikely to be the best option for you.

Downsides can be very large premiums on such coins. Fake coins can also be a factor.  Make sure to check things like weight, discolouration and size. There is lots of information online about how to spot if a coin is fake or real, so do your own thorough research.

If you don’t have a particular interest in the history of money, rare coins and currency, then that is completely fine. You can still buy coins such as a Britannia, Canadian Maple, American Eagle, South African Krugerrand etc, and still have a great investment for the future.

Whether you are into Numismatics or not make sure you buy all coins from a reputable dealer.
